Button drippers are irrigation accessories that emit water at a given rate when connected to a HDPE pipe. They are used to irrigate orchards, biennials, perennials, hedge tress, and forest trees. Each tree depending on its water requirement is watered using one or more button dripper. Button drippers are added on the pipe at the base of the tree or other crop by making a perforation on the HDPE pipe. They regulate water along the system for uniform flow so that irrespective of gradient, every plant will receive an equal amount of irrigation water.
Grekkon limited supplies 2 types of button drippers;
- Adjustable types. The farmer has complete control over the volume of water emitted by these drippers. From zero liters per hour (complete shut off) to seventy liters per hour (completely open). They are color coded in red and come in various sizes according to the manufacturer, but the discharge specs remain similar. The advantage with this type is that a farmer gets to decide how much water to give to each plant. A tree that needs more is adjusted for to receive as much, and vice versa. The down side is that one may under or over irrigate unwillingly.
- Non-adjustable types. These type cannot be adjusted for water flow rate and it irrigates according to the manufacturer’s set water discharge rate. Every discharge type is color coded for ease of identification. For instance, blue for 20 litres per hour discharge, black for 30 litres per hour discharge and so on. On the positive side, they provide a uniform amount of water to each tree crop. On the negative, one cannot adjust for individual crop water needs.
How to use Button Drippers
In Kenya, button drippers are used commonly on fruits, with the largest users being growers of; passion fruit, banana plantations, avocado, macadamia, tangerine, orange, tree tomato, apples and mango. The largest none fruit users are khat farmers.
Button drippers irrigation period is determined by the volume of water available in the system and the pressure. A tree crop is watered within a couple of minutes when water volume is high, and the pressure too. It will take longer if both or one of them is low.
Our technical team advises growers on the most appropriate type of right button drippers to use and the number based on; crop population, acreage, crop water requirement and available water pressure. These button drippers are available in any of our outlets in Nairobi, Eldoret and Nyeri.
